LSSL 5360 Textbook Chapter 13: Graphic Novels
What did I already know about the topics?
When considering graphic novels, I do not have much experience. I imagine pictures and comic book type styles with scenes that do not have large amounts of text and may even be in black and white. I immediately think of the Japanese or Korean manga and webtoons that I have read in the past online, but not in physical books.
What did I learn after I completed the assignment?
I learned that graphic novels are a form and can be in all other genres and that while many teachers do not read them, more and more children do! They are books that are of novel length and narrative in a comic book format, which are more complex than picture books. They utilize words and images together. Because of the many elements they contain, they can be effectively used to discuss mood and tone, themes, and characterization. They can be valuable as a motivation for reluctant readers or those with special reading needs. There are even classics and adaptations in graphic novel form that can help visual learners!
What do I still need to learn?
I had no idea there were so many available and cover so many diverse topics! While studying this chapter, I also was becoming more involved in shadowing at an elementary school library. While helping shelve books and process incoming ones, I was able to discuss graphic novels with the librarian who uses them frequently! I was happy to see many adaptations of classics like Frankenstein in the library already. The librarian mentioned that graphic novels are checked out very often by her students. As a result, I hope to learn more about the books available and to be more comfortable in using them as a resource. (In other words, I need to read more graphic novels so I can be more adept in these areas)!
How will I share this information with others?
I will definitely keep this form in mind when thinking of readers and teachers as a way to explore literature in a different way. They will be a great teaching tool visually and for ESL students as well.
