LSSL 5360 Textbook Chapter 9: Historical Fiction

K: The first thing I think of when I hear historical fiction are books like All Quiet on the Western Front and Gone with the Wind. I think of true elements of history dramatized with creative embellishment added in. I think of times I told myself I was reading for education and the factual elements, when really the author drew me in with his/her fictional enticements. 
Historical fiction can be enjoyed by all ages of readers, and I think it can be a great way to draw in reluctant readers as well.

W: Classifying literature as "historical" can change based on one's perspective. When I looked back at the examples that came to mind, I definitely went straight to books that depicted events before my life, but considering the different ages and experiences of readers, I will need to keep in mind, that one isolating historical fiction into a single time period will not work. Because "history" can be relative and more history is being made each day, what I personally view as historical may be very different that what my students view as history.
Consistency and accuracy of information is something that I may have to turn to outside resources to confirm as I evaluate historical fiction texts.

L: I will need to get into a habit of researching historical fiction books and utilizing the criteria mentioned to evaluate them, a habit that can also be applied to other genres as well. In addition, I need to learn and practice viewing literature from the eyes of the audience who will be reading it: my students.

How will I share this information with others?

S: I very much enjoy the genre of historical fiction, and will be excited to share this with my students. I will also like to continue reading more books in this genre to be able to have a wider selection to recommend to teachers that I work with.

K:  Before learning about this topic, some things I understood about the anatomy of books related to basic placement of sections (where copyright information was located, table of contents, author information) as well as a few basic terms like the cover, spine, and binding. LSSL 5360 Textbook Chapter 4: Awards

                                  What did I already know about the topics? K:  Prior to looking into the listed awards, I did not have much knowledge at all. I realized awarded books were recognized for being high quality or meeting certain standards and these were typically visible with some identification on the front cover. What did I learn after I completed each assignment? W:  I had much to learn! First, typically the award medal on the front cover is gold for the winner and silver for others that were honored. Next, I was happy to learn of the variety of awards given for many different forms of media including: nonfiction, poetry, graphic novels, and audio books. LSSL 5360 Textbook Chapter 11: Nonfiction

NONFICTION What did I already know about the topics? Nonfiction covers a vast range of information. Anytime I have I needed information, I have been able to find a book that relates to it. The information is factual, based on true events, it may be historical or detail important current events and new studies. My appreciation for nonfiction has increased as I have gotten older and realized the amount of research and effort it takes to compile a single book. What did I learn after I completed this assignment? The very first piece of information I learned was that nonfiction is defined by what it is not, because it can include other forms and genres.
