LSSL 5360 Textbook Chapter 6: Picture Books: Art and Text Merge

What did I already know about the topics?
K: Picture books are visually descriptive with limited or no words. The pictures play a big role in telling the story and adding to a reader’s understand. Picture books are typically targeted to younger children and appeal to visual senses.

What did I learn after I completed each assignment?
W: When discussing how to evaluate more of the physical aspects of picture books, I had much to learn.  The importance of picture books to children, especially those who are English language learners, is something I had not considered. Of course the books are captivating to see, but when the written language is not available to a person yet, the visual is even more valuable!

Another aspect I had not considered was condescension towards child readers in the tone of the book. While the language may be simplified at times, I agree with the statement that children are much more perceptive than we often give them credit for. Other things mentioned to consider included a book's binding depending on usage, picture size, and text placement.

I was happy to learn more of Richard Caldecott and that not only is he honored for his work as an illustrator, but as the creator of the first, true picture book. The quote mentioned in the articles that says, “Words are left out — but the picture says it. Pictures are left out — but the words say it. In short, it is the invention of the picture book,” really helped target what makes this form of literature different.

It was interesting how recent the development of picture books has been, as well as how reluctant some  illustrators were to identify themselves as such, and how much books are still developing not just with changing art styles, but with the inclusion of technology (interactivity, ebooks).

What do  I still need to learn?
L:One thing I would like to look into more regards the relationships between authors and illustrators, and furthermore, about the restraints publication companies can have on a piece of literature and its effect.

How will I share this information with others?
S:The idea of sharing picture books with English language learners as well as their parents is something I will definitely keep in mind. They provide a versatile vehicle of knowledge that helps make sharing literature available to everyone.
