LSSL 5360 Textbook Chapter 2: Why do we share literature with children?

What did I already know about the topics?
K: Sharing literature is something I am very passionate about! I believe it is important for a variety of reasons, including how it can improve communication, many facets in school readiness and success, imagination, and problem solving. It can allow readers to explore relationships with others and open so many windows to learning. The earlier sharing literature begins, the better; even parents reading to their children prenatally has been shown to have benefits!

What did I learn after I completed each assignment?
W: I identified with so many of the listed reasons in the video and slide-share. Some of the reasons included: reading for fun, developing empathy, supporting life-long readers and learners, and the exposure to a variety of cultures and perspectives. One I had not considered much previously was to read for vicarious experiences which can allow readers to explore consequences and learn from events in literature without having to go through those difficulties in real life. Although learning lessons is a lifelong adventure, being able to learn vicariously through literature is an impactful skill for school-age children.

What do I still need to learn?
L: Some things I hope to work on include instilling a love of reading in a child who may not have had much experience with literature before and may even be coming into this with a negative view as well as how to encourage parents who are busy to make the time to be involved in their children's learning and literacy. These two areas will be important to me in my role as a librarian.
How will I share this information with others?
S: Finally, this information again is applicable to my current job that I can share with my coworkers and families I serve in the community who have young children. In addition, the extensive list of reasons for sharing literature is something I would like to discuss with my many family members and friends who are teachers as well. It is never to late foster a love of literature and I hope to make an impact in my career.
