LSSL 5360 Textbook Chapter 10: Realistic Fiction

What did I already know about the topics?

Image result for what do you knowK: While I do not have a great working definition for realistic fiction, in simplicity I think it relates to reality and things that actually occur in our world. I do not think it is limited to a time span, and I also understand that it is not non-fiction even though it deals with real-world happening.

What did I learn after I completed each assignment?
W: The first thing I was able to learn when exploring this topic, is that the time period realistic fiction relates to is contemporary or modern, and the elements in this genre of literature should all be consistent with that. In addition to being consistent with this, it should also be believable to our readers! This is very important for children, who are often not afraid to point out inconsistencies or things they do not think would really happen. 
Other important aspects include a slowly emerging theme and subject matter that is applicable to readers. This makes me think of things like books on divorce, homosexuality, technology, substance abuse, adoption, and many other topics that may not have been popular decades ago, but now books explore families and struggles of all varieties. This genre is important because it deals with things that are important to people, and they are relatable. It makes me happy to see more and more contemporary topics covered all the time in new literature.

What do  I still need to learn?
Related imageL: It will be important to keep in mind current issues and important topics that are going on in my students' lives so that this genre of literature is applicable and helpful. I hope to continue learning constantly about my students and have strong relationships with them so that I can best serve them in my role. 


How will I share this information with others?

It is one that children may not know about yet, but one that they can be introduced to and continue to enjoy and utilize as they grow in age and as readers. I think it will be important to share with students and teachers alike applicable texts that they can relate to and learn from.

K:  Before learning about this topic, some things I understood about the anatomy of books related to basic placement of sections (where copyright information was located, table of contents, author information) as well as a few basic terms like the cover, spine, and binding. I did not know of specific or technical terms for many important parts of a physical book. What did I learn after I completed each assignment? LSSL 5360 Textbook Chapter 4: Awards

                                  What did I already know about the topics? K:  Prior to looking into the listed awards, I did not have much knowledge at all. I realized awarded books were recognized for being high quality or meeting certain standards and these were typically visible with some identification on the front cover. What did I learn after I completed each assignment? W:  I had much to learn! First, typically the award medal on the front cover is gold for the winner and silver for others that were honored. Next, I was happy to learn of the variety of awards given for many different forms of media including: nonfiction, poetry, graphic novels, and audio books. LSSL 5360 Textbook Chapter 11: Nonfiction

NONFICTION What did I already know about the topics? Nonfiction covers a vast range of information. Anytime I have I needed information, I have been able to find a book that relates to it. The information is factual, based on true events, it may be historical or detail important current events and new studies. My appreciation for nonfiction has increased as I have gotten older and realized the amount of research and effort it takes to compile a single book. What did I learn after I completed this assignment? The very first piece of information I learned was that nonfiction is defined by what it is not, because it can include other forms and genres. To evaluate it, the author's qualifications are important to keep in mind.
