LSSL 5360 Textbook Chapter 1: Introduction

What did I already know about the topics?
K: Prior knowledge that I have regarding children's literature mainly stems from personal experience in my childhood or the times I share books with the families I serve in my current job. As a result, I have enjoyed them for entertainment and to promote literacy but have not yet critically analyzed them. The basic descriptions I know to differentiate children's literature from other categories includes lower word count and simplified vocabulary, more illustrations, and topics that often address social-emotional developmental topics.

What did I learn after I completed each assignment?
W: After reading the introduction, I understand that the focus of this textbook will be on "evaluating, genres, forms, and formats" of children's literature. This will include a variety of forms of media.

What do I still need to learn?
L: Some of the things I look forward to learning soon include becoming more knowledgeable of children's literature for in the age range of five and older (because I have not worked with that age range recently). I hope to be able to evaluate children's literature and determine which books will best meet the needs of my future students.
How will I share this information with others?
S: Some ways I will be able to share this information currently, is during work with the other parent educators who serve families and promote literacy along with my family and friends who have children. I think this information will be an important foundation for future learning as well.
